Things to do in Tanjung Sepat

Hello readers! 

Just started my final semester of uni after a 3 weeks break back at home. Most of the time I was just slacking at home, but lucky enough was able to go out for a day trip with two highschool friends! Went all the way to Tanjung Sepat, a small sea side town in between Sepang and Banting. Can't say it's a very touristy place, but if you just want to take your eyes off the concrete jungle in KL and instead look at green plantations, kampung style houses and gloomy beaches, here's where you can go. And trust me some of the places here are totally instagrammable. :) 

Gonna share our itinerary and our experience of this small town. But before that, really into video making now after my first video for Batam, here's a video to show you things to do, food to eat and places to go in Tanjung Sepat!

We left PJ at around 9 and arrived at Tanjung Sepat at about 10.30am, went straight to our first destination. 

1. Ah Hock Seafood Bak Kut Teh 亞福海鮮肉骨茶

Thought of having the famous Bak Kut Teh for brunch but turns out we were too late to reach and the boss told us that they ran out of pork for Seafood Bak Kut Teh. First bad news of the day :( but the boss went on to recommend us a fried fish fillet dish and mix pork soup. Few moments later, one of the bosses came to us again and offered us Seafood Bak Kut Teh with Pig Tail Meat instead. Basically Seafood Bak Kut Teh is just Bak Kut Teh with plenty of prawns, sotong (squid) and fish fillet.  

To be plain honest, the Bak Kut Teh taste good but I cant tell the difference between this seafood version and the normal one LOL. Like many Klang Bak Kut Teh, it has a very strong Dang Gui taste. And I was more in love with the pig tail which is super soft haha. The pork soup is gooood, with yummy pork balls and even pig blood, feels very refreshing hehe. The fish paste is super bouncy, your teeth can just cut through, and crunch it. Love the fried fish fillet dish thanks to its strong cilantro flavor.

All recommended by boss, total damage was RM84 (incl two bowls of rice and two can drinks) 

2. Wishing Trees and Wishing Well near Lovers Bridge

The famous Lovers Bridge of Tanjung Sepat is no longer around. But the local specialty shop is still there. The wishing trees together with many displays of old school antiques like bicycles, kerosene lamps and wine barrels are still attracting many visitors. Well to be honest the displays feels abit all over the place, but oh well, it's still fun to see all these ancient stuffs.

The store sells many old school treats like these candies and lollipops. 

3. Rainbow Walkway and Twin Towers of Tanjung Sepat

So when we were at the Wishing Trees, a man gave us a flyer that introduces attractions in Tanjung Sepat. Turns out the man was the boss of the shop and he was recommending us to this new place and gave us directions. We followed the instructions by the boss and just a few minutes drive away, we found a place which is 70% similar to the place at the Lovers Bridge. The same twin tower of wine barrels, the same displays of antiques. Seems to me the boss is trying to move all attractions to this new place. But there's some new elements like the rainbow walkway below. Though kinda dirty, but it does make a photo prettier hehe.  And you can actually walk down to the beach (if you don't mind your shoes going dirty). 

I like how it was on low tide, feels like staring into nothing and nowhere to go. 

The twin towers connected with a bridge which you can go up to. 

Love the powdery sky. Pretty good place to take those artsy instagram photos I believe. But obviously we weren't going for artsy haha. 

4. Ganofarm Homestay's Bridge

Lovers bridge is not around and we were delighted to find out that there's a similar bridge at the back of Ganofarm Homestay. I guess we are somehow lucky and unlucky. Unlucky because the bridge that stretches out to the sea is blocked from access. However there seems to be like some construction going on right next to the bridge, lucky we were still able to go past those and step on the still-available part of the bridge. Don't miss the chance to take pretty photos to update your instagram!

Loving the view here, again, the low tide together with the vast skies creates a very peaceful scene.

5. Hai Yew Heng Pau Store and Kopi Break at Lorong 4

After all the sun, time for some rest and we went to the tourist-filled Lorong 4 with many kopitiams, food carts and specialty stores. But the main star here is definitely the famous Hainanese pau shop, Hai Yew Heng. Turns out they don't serve ready-to-eat pau but only has the frozen version. So we picked up some to bring home. And my favorite has to be the Mui Choy pau, love the strong flavors and the pau skin was really fluffy, not like your usual pau that is often too dense and starchy! While waiting for the Pau, we had Kopi and Fishballs at the kopitiam opposite the pau store.

Fishballs (RM5.00) here are like super bouncy. 

refreshing Kopi (RM1.50)! Not sure if they are using the famous coffee in Tanjung Sepat but it taste really good.

6. Mr. Black Homemade Pau

Sort of like a rival of Hai Yew Heng, this pau store offers more variations and it's has seats for dine-in customers. But gotta mention that the kopitiam itself was pretty much invaded by loads of flies. Really disgusted initially, but oh well, as long as they dont touch my food.

Deep Fried Yam Pau 炸芋头包, Mui Choy Pau 梅菜包(pink dot), and Rice Wine Pau 黄酒鸡包(orange dot) 

Gotta say I am very impressed with the paus! Personal favorite is the Yam Pau. I thought it would be some sweet pau like our usual Red Bean Bun but it has this savory flavor that taste awesome together with the crunchy pau. The Rice Wine Chicken is also delicious, it's abit like XiaoLongBao due to the hot gravy inside. But the gravy sinks into the fluffy pau skin and makes it so delicious!! 

Salted Fish Pan Fried Pau 咸鱼包

This one has thin crust with chewy salted fish filling inside. Initially I couldn't really take the strong smell of Salted Fish, but it gets better after a few bites.

7. Morib Beach 

By 4.00pm, we've pretty much finished exploring Tanjung Sepat town, we've decided to head to Morib Beach instead which takes around 20 minutes drive. There's quite a lot of visitors and you see people playing with roller skate, flying kites and kids driving mini cars. There's also a food court nearby where you can enjoy food or just take a coffee break. It was still low tide when we first reached, many visitors went down the beach and many walked as far as 500m i think. But around 5.30pm, the tide starts rising rapidly and you get a different view.

Love it when it's low tide, reminds me of Gaomei Wetlands in Taiwan! 

when the tide rises, you'll see the water reflects the bright sunlight, tiny beams of light dancing around the surface of water. 

The sun was shining brightly, but there's abit of breeze, so it's not too hot afterall. We were just chilling out, staring into the sea, listening to the waves, and I almost fell asleep haha. And with that, we ended our exploration. 

Again, I really recommend this place for anyone who wants to have a break with friends but doesn't want to go too far from KL. Well I guess we moved pretty fast, but you can always take things slowly, try out more food stalls in the area and explore the many temples around, I swear you can totally temple-hop over here. Or you can go to Sepang or Banting once you're done with Tanjung Sepat.

Thanks Miu for being the cheerful companion who made sure no moment was boring, and for taking pretty photos that I've featured int he video! To be honest, I don't think I've talked that much with them while we were still in school. Really grateful that they still keep in touch. I've always enjoyed my annual meetups with Miu to explore and also catch up with each other. Glad that we're still doing this and I can't wait for our next trip!

My 3 weeks break was over and it's time to face the last but definitely not least final semester of my university life.

Learn and Appreciate: National Museum of Singapore

I have always been grateful to whoever came up with the idea of museum, it makes learning easier really, especially for people like me who can barely scan one page of book. Let alone history texts. A good museum would be one that presents knowledge in the most understandable form, I think so far Sasana Kijang was my favorite (okay not that I went to many museums), but National Museum of Singapore also has its plus points!

Too bad I wasn't able to visit their permanent exhibitions as they are under renovation. But the SG700 special exhibition was great enough for a glance at SG's long history. Of course, you might argue with me that, isn't SG's history and MY's history pretty much the same, but this exhibition has an emphasis on transformation, which I think has a rather different history from Msia's. It's something worth learning. 

  

We paid S$3 for the admission of SG700, other exhibition halls are free to enter.
Right before the entrance of SG700, there's a exhibition area that presents and explains archaeology history in Singapore, showing all kinds of tools used in excavation and examples of artifacts found. That small area is already interesting enough to take up quite some time to go through. So I suggest, please go to the museum in the morning, or at least right after lunch time. Or else you wont have enough time to visit and explore all exhibitions in detail.

The SG700 exhibition has very good visuals, I love the beautiful and artsy illustrations of historical figures and stories.  Of course there were many historical objects and replicas on display as well, together with audio recordings from people who witnessed the past. But what really made the exhibition level up was all the "scent". Yeap they actually prepared tubes of chemicals that actually give out certain smell which is related to a certain historical period. Yes It's definitely not just pleasant scents like fragrance and spices, but scents that really gives you an idea on what people actually felt at a certain place, certain point of time in history. Spoiler: There's one scent that almost made me throw up. Unforgettable, gotta praise them for recreating that sense of FEAR.

The Syonan-Era Area which was lit up in bright glares of red that resembles bloodshed and fear in darkness. Really love the presentation of this area. 

Loads of replicas of historical materials from the past with English translations. 

The Changi Prison section

Look out for the so-detailed-and-real dioramas!

Dioramas are just so nice to observe, gives you a look to everyone and everything in the picture at one moment of time.

2nd exhibition of the day, In Memoriam: Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Btw the smart but failed "battleship" telegraph by Mr. Lee Kuan Yew to hint his family about cooking steamboat was on display as well! 

3rd exhibition: The Foundation of Run Run Shaw's Cinema Empire

Another interesting exhibition to get a glimpse of the uprising film industry in Malaysia, Singapore and Asia in the past. There's also 2 screening areas with a few comfy chairs for those who wanna watch classics from the Shaw Brothers studios.

Actually there were 2 more exhibitions that we've visited but I didn't really take any photos. 

After visiting all the exhibitions, I decided that I must take some decent photos at this beautiful colonial era building. The windows, the arches, the window panels, everything looks beautiful! Forgive me, vain session starts now:

Hehe it was right after her finals and we decided we shall go explore somewhere interesting again.

I think only she's willing to go to a museum with me after studying so much for exams, as if we haven't study enough and decided we should read more history...

Will visit here again for their permanent exhibitions

NSM has really put in a lot of efforts in its exhibitions, they are informative, interactive, and interesting. The beautifully restored colonial building with modern features will be a good place to spend a quiet afternoon while taking in knowledge. Besides, learning the history in museum would certainly make you feel grateful of what we have and grateful of the fact our ancestors have to go through all the hard time to bring us this far.
